FAQ
Common questions.
Straight answers about inspections, cleaning, repairs and what to expect when we visit.
Level 1 vs. Level 2 inspection?
A Level 1 inspection looks at the readily accessible parts of the chimney and fits routine yearly checkups when nothing about the system has changed. A Level 2 goes further, usually including a camera scan of the flue, and is the standard recommendation when a home changes hands, after a chimney fire or major storm, or when you change fuel or appliances.
Do I need an inspection when buying a home?
A Level 2 inspection is the recommended standard at the sale or transfer of a property. You'll get photos and video of the flue and exterior so you and your agent can negotiate with facts.
How often should my chimney be cleaned?
Plan on a yearly inspection, with cleaning whenever buildup calls for it. Heavy wood burners may need cleaning more often. We'll tell you honestly if yours doesn't need it yet.
Do gas fireplaces need service too?
Yes. Gas doesn't produce creosote, but vents can still collect debris, nests, and corrosion, and components wear out. An annual check keeps it in good working order.
What are signs my chimney needs attention?
Smoky or musty odors, smoke drifting into the room, a heavy black glaze in the firebox, water stains near the chimney, crumbling mortar or brick flakes, rusty damper parts, or animal sounds in the flue.
Will the work make a mess in my house?
We lay down drop cloths, protect the hearth and nearby furniture, and use a HEPA vacuum during cleaning, then clean up before we leave.
Can you help with a storm or insurance claim?
Yes. We document hail and wind damage with photos and an itemized scope you can share with your insurer. Your insurance company decides what's covered.
How much will it cost?
A chimney inspection is $197, and a service call is $155. Any repairs are quoted line by line after we look, and no repair work starts until you approve it.
