Masonry

Solid brick and mortar keep a chimney standing straight and dry. We repair joints, replace damaged brick and rebuild crowns and chimney tops, matched to your home.

What it is

Mortar joints wear out faster than brick, and once they open up water gets into the masonry and the damage speeds up. Bricks spall (flake and crumble), crowns crack, and the top courses of a chimney can loosen. Catching it early with tuckpointing and targeted brick replacement costs far less than a full rebuild later.

Signs you need it

  • Mortar joints that are recessed, sandy or missing
  • Bricks that are flaking, cracked or crumbling
  • A crown with cracks or pieces missing
  • A chimney top that looks loose, leaning or out of line
  • White staining or rust streaks on the brick

What we do

  1. Tuckpoint worn joints with mortar matched to your existing masonry
  2. Replace spalled and cracked brick with a close color and size match
  3. Rebuild crowns with a proper overhang and drip edge
  4. Rebuild chimney tops or full chimneys when repair is no longer enough
  5. Clean up thoroughly and photograph the finished work

FAQ

Masonry questions.

What is tuckpointing?

Tuckpointing is grinding out worn mortar joints and refilling them with fresh mortar. It restores strength and keeps water from soaking into the chimney.

Can you match my existing brick?

We work to match brick size, color and texture, and mortar color, as closely as possible. We will show you options before we start.

Do I need a full rebuild?

Not usually. Most chimneys need targeted repair. A rebuild only makes sense when the structure is loose or the damage is widespread, and we will show you why if we recommend it.
