What a Level 2 Chimney Inspection Covers

Short answer: a Level 2 inspection is a Level 1 inspection plus a video camera scan of the full flue and a look at accessible attics, crawl spaces and the exterior. It is the recommended level when a home is sold, after a chimney fire, lightning strike or hard storm, and any time the system changes (a new insert, a new liner, or a switch in fuel).

The three inspection levels

  • Level 1: the readily accessible parts of the chimney, firebox, damper and connections. Right for a yearly checkup when nothing has changed.
  • Level 2: everything in a Level 1, plus a camera scan of the interior of the flue and accessible areas of the attic, crawl space and roof.
  • Level 3: used only when a Level 2 points to a hidden problem that needs removal of a building or chimney component to reach.

These levels come from NFPA 211, the national standard for chimneys, fireplaces and vents.

What we check on a Level 2

  • Flue liner joints, cracks, gaps and offsets, on camera
  • Creosote and soot buildup and which stage it is in
  • Firebox, damper, smoke chamber and smoke shelf
  • Crown, cap and flashing from the roof when conditions allow
  • Clearances to framing where the chimney passes through the attic
  • Signs of water entry: staining, spalling brick, rust on the damper
